Weimar is situated in the heart of Germany, in the middle of the rich and diverse cultural region of Thuringia. World famous historical personalities such as Martin Luther, Johann Sebastian Bach or Friedrich Nietzsche lived and worked here. Thuringia was a centre of new pedagogic approaches -  the Kindergarten (Friedrich Föbel), Waldorf School (Rudolf Steiner) and Jenaplan School (Peter Petersen) all began here. Famous congresses of the German workers movement were held in Eisenach, Gotha and Erfurt. In Jena, Abbe, Schott and Carl Zeiss established the famous optical and mechanical industry. And cities like Leipzig, Dessau, Berlin or Dresden are just a few hours away by train.
